When David Gaines joined Glendora Fire Company in January 2026, he wasn’t new to the fire service. After more than 13 years as a firefighter and working professionally for a neighboring fire department, he saw an opportunity to bring his experience to a team focused on growth, training and teamwork.
“I knew Glendora had the stipend program, and I wanted to come over and help out,” Gaines said. “I figured I could help an organization that’s trying to grow and expand.”
That decision quickly led to a leadership role. Just five months after joining the fire company, Gaines was promoted to lieutenant, a reflection of both his experience and Glendora’s commitment to recognizing leadership and providing opportunities for growth.
For Gaines, one of Glendora Fire Company’s greatest strengths is the partnership between volunteer and stipend firefighters. Together, they respond to nearly 300 emergency calls each year, including fire alarms, EMS assists, natural gas emergencies, motor vehicle accidents and structure fires.
“The stipend program brings firefighters from different backgrounds and different departments. It’s a really good melting pot because you’re always learning something new from the people you’re working with,” Gaines said.
Volunteers and stipend members train together twice each month, sharing knowledge and building the skills needed to serve the community safely and effectively.
“We work really well together. Everyone is here for the same reason. Whether it’s training or responding to calls, there’s always an opportunity to learn from each other,” he added.
Gaines said the company’s culture of mentorship and professional development is what makes Glendora stand out.
“We’re a very progressive fire company. We have a strong training program, opportunities for advancement and a department that’s continuing to grow and redefine itself,” he said.
In addition to offering the stipend program for certified firefighters, Glendora Fire Company offers volunteer firefighter, junior firefighter and non-emergency membership opportunities that require no prior fire service experience. Training and gear are provided at no cost.
“The opportunities are there,” he said. “You’ll learn, you’ll grow, and you’ll build relationships with firefighters who become like family.”
