A “Volunteers Wanted” sign outside Glendora Fire Company was all it took for Dante Renzetti to take the first step toward becoming a volunteer firefighter.
Just a few months later, the New Jersey Department of Transportation employee discovered that volunteering has challenged him in new ways, helped him grow personally and introduced him to people who share a commitment to serving others.
“It’s a great challenge and I’m learning skills that will help me throughout life,” Renzetti said. “I get to protect the lives of others and serve my community while also bettering myself physically and mentally.”
One of the things that surprised Renzetti most was how far people travel to serve with Glendora Fire Company. Through its stipend program, Glendora attracts certified firefighters from across the region, creating a team with diverse experience. Volunteers train alongside stipend firefighters, giving Renzetti the opportunity to learn from experienced members with a variety of backgrounds.
“I’m already learning valuable lessons that are helping me grow mentally, physically and as an overall individual, proving that becoming a volunteer firefighter was a smart choice for me,” he said.
Glendora Fire Company offers opportunities for both volunteers and certified firefighters. Learn more and see how you can get involved at glendoranjfirefighters.org.
